Voted "Best Vegetarian Restaurant" by Fairfield County Weekly in 2004 and a 2001 winner of the Zagat Survey's "Award of Distinction," the Bloodroot Collective's vegetarian fare subscribes to the notion that good food takes time, and chef-owners Selma Miriam and Noel Furie say that time is the most important ingredient in their recipes. The mostly vegan menu changes on a monthly basis, featuring both seasonal and world cuisine, but the ingredients are always fresh, organic, and locally grown.

"Enjoying a meal at your own pace, enjoying delicious taste from the finest of preparation and ingredients, sipping exquisite wines and special beers and ales is a good reason" to visit Bloodroot Collective, the owners say, "but desserts from Bloodroot are desserts that will make you willing to line up." The vegan Chocolate Devastation Cake is a perennial favorite.

Started in 1977, Bloodroot has become a local institution. Customers have been longstanding and loyal, with second and third generations now coming to Bloodroot to enjoy its creative take on classic dishes, such as pasta primavera made with organic spring vegetables and nondairy white sauce. Diners return again and again to the restaurant not only for its ever-changing menu, but also for its casual, self-serve style and laid-back atmosphere. Homemade weavings cascade from the rafters that crisscross the vaulted ceiling of the dining room, which boasts a spectacular view of an inlet off the Long Island Sound.

The frequent workshops conducted at Bloodroot, including weaving and cooking classes, add to the community feel. "Things are a little different here," say Miriam and Furie. "It's evident from the moment you step inside the door."
